Halo 3 ODST: Recycled and Overpriced

odst-10-07-09

Halo 3 ODST should have been given a different name. Something much more accurate. “More Halo 3 Maps for $60” would have been perfect. THEN it would have actually described what you just bought.

ODST is the same old Halo 3 with a new name.

Maybe that’s simplifying the game too much. But the truth is ODST is a “new” game with the same old graphics, gameplay, and style as the first Halo 3. Basically, you’ve got Halo 3 with a new main character and a few new maps / environments. And that isn’t worth my $60. No way.

Halo 3 Set Expectations Too High

Everything in Halo 3 was new (like forge) or improved in a big way (like graphics). Remember when Halo 3 was released? It was a mind blowing, face melting game. In fact, I wrote that Halo 3 was the most complete video game ever! If you read that post, I talked about all the awesomeness of Halo 3: Co-op, mulitplayer, Forge and the Theater. Also, Halo 3 was a huge upgrade in graphic, rendering, lighting, etc.

The upgrade from Halo 2 up to Halo 3 was incredible – and I’m sure you agree. Plus, it felt cheap for only $60 considering all of the wicked new features.

However, the upgrade set expectations way too high for every future Halo game. I was hoping for some sort of upgrade with ODST and it didn’t happen. Yes, ODST says “Halo 3” right in the title and that should have been a clue it’s more of an “add-on” than a full featured game. But that’s not what I expected for $60.

ODST Should Have Been DLC and Cheaper

Unfortunately, the developers didn’t stick to the original idea of keeping ODST as a smaller side project. They decided to turn ODST into a full game, with $60 price tag and sell it in stores.

ODST doesn’t give you much, other than new maps – that’s why it should have been DLC. If ODST was downloadable via Xbox Marketplace and cost less, I’d be in! Like Left 4 Dead and most games I’ve already purchased, I’m down with new maps at a reasonable price.

I’m a Video Game Snob

I want quality games and I don’t care who makes them. I’m not going to run out and buy every game that’s made by Bungie, Microsoft Studios or says Halo on the cover. And that’s why I can say that I won’t buy Halo 3 ODST.
